Computer Search helps you find Mysterious Fossil on the first turn while conveniently offering a way to discard Energy to fuel Mewtwo’s Energy Absorption. From there, you aim to devastate any Evolution-based deck with a Turn 2 Aerodactyl while Mewtwo unleashes its Psyburn attack. If Aerodactyl enters play only after your opponent was able to evolve their Pokémon, you can use Mew’s Devolution Beam to permanently return these Pokémon to their previous stage.

Tip: Keep a Double Colorless Energy in your hand so that you can easily retreat Aerodactyl if your opponent uses Gust of Wind to attempt to strand it in the Active spot.

This is your typical Lickitung/Scyther deck, but with one additional way to remove Energy from your opponent’s board: Golduck’s Hyper Beam. So what makes Golduck a better Hyper Beam Pokémon than Dragonair? The answer is comparing the Basic Pokémon they evolve from. Psyduck is not just useful for a game-winning Headache in the final turns, but with the Water Energy needed for Golduck’s Hyper Beam, it becomes a useful attacker against the popular Magmar.

Tip: Keep your opponent guessing by alternating between this deck and a hyperaggressive Psyduck deck, like Arcanine/Electrode. That way, when your opponent starts a game facing your Psyduck, they won’t know which deck they’re up against and are more likely to make a Turn 1 mistake with Professor Oak.

The goal of this deck is to tank Exeggutor with enough Energy to unleash massive Big Eggsplosion attacks. However, piling on Energy isn’t easy in a format dominated by Energy Removal & Super Energy Removal, so you’ll need to pull out a few tricks. First and foremost, you can protect Exeggutor’s Energy with Lass, but if that doesn’t work, Exeggutor’s Teleport allows you to bring Exeggutor to safety after its Energy has been stripped. From there, you can use Gastly’s Energy Conversion to bring Double Colorless Energies back into your hand, then rebuild.

This Lickitung variant proceeds like most Lickitung decks do: piling on Tongue Wrap damage while delivering a series of Energy Removal and Super Energy Removal cards, then shifting to higher-damage attacks to maintain pressure on the opponent. As the game winds down, you’ll need to find the perfect window to bring in Moltres and deliver a series of Wildfire attacks that bring your opponent’s deck to zero. While all of this is happening, Muk’s Toxic Gas deals with a variety of pesky Pokémon Powers that could give the opponent the upper hand, like Blastoise’s Rain Dance, Dodrio’s Retreat Aid and Ditto’s Transform.

Tip: Preserve Double Colorless Energy to retain an easy way for Muk to escape the Active position if your opponent targets it with Gust of Wind.

As you start applying pressure on your opponent with both of Magmar’s attacks, they will have to watch out for two different Arcanines. Your Base Set Arcanine is perfect for taking down 80 HP Pokémon (like Wigglytuff) in a single hit, while your promo Arcanine can deliver a sneaky Flames of Rage attack for two Fire Energy. Flames of Rage is particularly useful against decks that repeatedly attack for small amounts of damage (notably Lickitung decks), as you can allow Growlithe to absorb damage before surprising your opponent with a one-hit KO. Defender helps your damaged Arcanine survive after delivering Flames of Rage, and it also helps protect your Base Set Arcanine and Chansey from their self-damage. All of this happens while Dodrio allows you to easily retreat between Pokémon, enabling Pokémon Center to heal huge amounts of damage you accumulate across your board.

Tip: Use Magmar’s Smokescreen against Mewtwo to protect your benched Ditto, giving you the opportunity to deliver a one-hit KO on Mewtwo with Ditto on the following turn.

The biggest selling point of the Magmarbuzz deck is that it doesn’t get walled by Resistance like other Haymaker variants. (May God have mercy on anyone gutsy enough to bust out a Sandslash.) As long as you can maintain Energy in play, you will be able to apply consistent pressure on your opponent.

You’ll want to get Dodrio (ideally, two) in play so that you can easily switch between Magmar and Hitmonchan, targeting the two most important Weaknesses in the Base–Fossil format: Fire & Fighting. With a low Pokémon count, though, you’ll find Pokémon Trader a bit too unreliable to get Dodrio into play. Instead, you’ll likely find yourself better suited to rely on the luck of the coin with Poké Ball.

Tip: Aim for your opponent’s face when flipping a coin for Poké Ball. Then, only if it lands Tails, aggressively insist they interfered with the coin and demand a reflip. For a bonus, accuse them of deliberately interfering.

Computer Search & Professor Oak allow you to discard Energy as early as the first turn of the game, fueling Mewtwo’s Energy Absorption. Between Mewtwo and Electabuzz, you have two Pokémon capable of dealing 40 damage on Turn 2. Though this Psychic/Lightning duo was popular in 1999, you’ll discover the deck did not age well in a format now full of Psychic-resistant Pokémon. Both Chansey and Lickitung are particularly difficult for this deck to deal with, and when you encounter them, you will generally only be able to win by deckout.

If you’ve played a traditional Hitmonchan/Electabuzz Haymaker deck in the Base–Fossil format, you might have noticed Electabuzz is often an underwhelming attacker. So this Haymaker variant chooses to cut Electabuzz entirely and instead adds Grass Energy for Scyther’s Swords Dance. With 4 Double Colorless Energy, you have a realistic chance of delivering a 60-damage Slash (70 with PlusPower) on the second turn. These Double Colorless Energies serve multiple purposes, too, helping turn Ditto into an effective attacker and also allowing you to retreat Hitmonchan when it encounters Fighting Resistance. Getting Hitmonchan out of the Active spot is something you’ll need to do often in this format, which is why the deck maxes out on Scoop Up and also plays 2 Switch.

Tip: Use Scoop Up to take your damaged Ditto out of danger in the Active spot, denying your opponent an easy KO from either retreating or playing Gust of Wind.

This deck’s first turns (usually Smokescreen or Lullaby) might not appear too threatening to your opponent, but while you’re doing this, Mankey helps you prepare the perfect turn by identifying your best Prize cards. Once you’ve spotted them, you’ll rush your opponent with Professor Oak in order to fill your bench and deliver a KO with Wigglytuff’s Do the Wave! Just before that KO is delivered, though, you’ll want to play Lass to safeguard yourself from Energy Removal & Super Energy Removal. This would usually hit you just as hard as your opponent, but with knowledge of where your best Prize cards are, you can select the perfect Prize to keep the pressure on.

Tip: Once you have your opponent in a pickle, use Peek to keep an eye on the top card of their deck. If you spot a card that spells trouble for you (like Professor Oak), switch into Moltres and discard that card with Wildfire.

Able to one-hit KO Hitmonchan, Mewtwo is a great Pokémon to cover Wigglytuff’s Fighting Weakness. But Mewtwo is just one perk of running Psychic-type Pokémon with Wigglytuff! You’ll also gain access to the useful Mr. Mime, as well as Gastly, whose Energy Conversion attack can recover Double Colorless Energy cards to rebuild Wigglytuff.

Tip: Use Energy Removal & Super Energy Removal to prevent attacks that would knock out your fragile Gastly following its Energy Conversion attack.
